In 2021, the world's shipments of wood chips reached almost 35 million m3, close to the highest on record. Significant expansion of pulp capacity in China combined with a lack of domestic wood fiber has driven the global increase in traded wood chips over the past decade (see chart). About four-fifths of the trade was hardwood chips in 2021, predominantly destined for pulp mills in Asia, while the remaining volume was softwood chips.

Valmet has progressed in reviewing its operations in Russia and implementing its exit plan.

Already in the spring, the company decided not to make any new sales projects in Russia. In addition, it canceled EUR 70 million of its order backlog on March 31, 2022.

Due to the excellent cooperation between Sun Paper and ANDRITZ, the evaporation plant at the mill started up ahead of schedule, with all other process islands starting up on time. Moreover, the wet lap plant achieved production close to the guaranteed values immediately after start-up.

On the evening of April 15, Jingxing Paper announced its 2021 annual report and disclosed that it plans to invest 80 million yuan to build a deinking and recycled pulp project for household paper.

Regarding the new project, Jingxing Paper announced on the same day that it will invest in the deinking and recycled pulp project for household paper.

Ilim Group recently published a report on its performance in 2021. The company produced 3.64 million tons of finished products, and pulp continues to make-up the major share (2.16 million tons) of Ilim's production volumes.

Ilim continued to increase the share of packaging materials in its product portfolio. Last year this segment accounted for about a third (815 thousand tons) of the company's production volumes.

In H1 2021, the trade volume in the global corrugated paper box market totalled 1.9M tonnes, dropping by 5% compared to the same period last year. Despite that, it rose by 16% to $3.6B in value terms due to the average carton box price increased by approximately 23% to $1,882 per tonne. Germany, the U.S., the Netherlands and China remain the leading suppliers in the global corrugated paper box market, accounting for 41% of total export volume. The Netherlands, Mexico and France are the largest importers of paperboard cases worldwide. 

The paper industry in China showed an increase in income and profits In January-October of the current year, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Informatization.

According to the Ministry, for the reporting period industry's revenue amounted to 1.22 trillion yuan (about US$191 billion), up 16.8 percent. more than in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the profits of the paper industry for the period increased by 22.4% year on year to 70.72 billion yuan.

Andritz has received an order from Liansheng Pulp & Paper to supply two tissue machines, including stock preparation equipment, to its mill in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China.

Start-up is planned for the second quarter of 2022.

The two CrescentFormer tissue machines of type PrimeLineTM W 2000 have a design speed of 2,000 m/min and a working width of 5.65 m. Both are equipped with a large suction press and a PrimeDry Steel Yankee.

European softwood logs were practically non-existent at Chinese ports five years ago. However, a combination of a never-ending hunger for more wood in the country, reductions in shipments from previously significant trading partners, and an oversupply of timber in Europe have altered the log flow into China over the past four years, according to the latest Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ) report.

Rengo Co., Ltd. in late-September announced that its joint venture in Vietnam, Vina Kraft Paper Co., Ltd., plans to build a new containerboard mill in Binh Xuyen Industrial Park, Vinh Phuc Province, Vietnam.

Rengo holds a 30% stake in the joint venture and Siam Kraft Industry Co., Ltd. holds 70%.

Thailand-based SCGP announced that it is moving ahead with an expansion plan to build a new production complex in Vinh Phuc in northern Vietnam for the production of packaging paper.

The total investment amounts to 8,133 billion VND (approx. US$353,500.00).

Voith today announced price adjustments for paper machine clothing, shoe press sleeves, roll covers, mechanical roll service and doctoring solutions.

In a press release, Voith said, "The global pandemic has caused major unpredictable challenges in both public and private areas. One of these effects is enormous cost increases in many industrial sectors, for example raw materials, packaging and transport.

Voith announced that it has received an order from Shandong Huatai Paper to rebuild and modernize PM 11 located in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong. The project will convert PM 11's production from newsprint to high-quality graphic paper.

After the rebuild, the production line will have a significantly increased annual capacity of 520,000 tons at a design speed of 1,800 m/min.

China’s imports of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard reached the highest level ever, picking up by +54% to 892K tonnes in 2020. Russia, India and Viet Nam constitute the largest suppliers to China. Last year, Russia and India boosted their exports to China threefold, while Viet Nam saw a 58%-spike in terms of volume of exported products to China. In 2020, the average wrapping paper import price dropped by -24.1% y-o-y.

In 2020, China increased its chemical wood pulp imports by +10% y-o-y to 24M tonnes. It was driven by rising demand for paper packaging and tableware amid the pandemic and further stimulated by a sharp fall in import prices last year. Brazil, Indonesia and Canada are the major suppliers, providing 57% of the total import volume. Bleached sulphate pulp accounted for 95% of total wood pulp imports into China. 

Canfor Pulp Products Inc. on July 29 reported second quarter 2021 results. The company reported operating income of $51.0 million for the second quarter of 2021, up $46.1 million from the operating income of $4.9 million reported for the first quarter of 2021, in large part reflecting materially higher Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp unit sales realizations, and to a lesser extent, an 8% increase in shipments following transportation disruptions experienced in the first quarter of 2021.

Voith has received an order to supply and build a new board machine to Asia Symbol at its Rugao site, located 180 km north-west of Shanghai, China.

The new machine, designated BM 13, will have the capacity to produce up to 1,000,000 tons of high-quality coated folding boxboard per year in the basis weight range 170 - 400 g/m2. The planned design speed is 1,400 m/min.

ANDRITZ has received an order from Jiangxi Five Star Paper, China to deliver four PrimeCoat Jet coaters for online coating for their mill in Hukou county (Jiujiang city), Jiangxi province. Start-up is scheduled for 2021.

The four coaters for the white cardboard and folding boxboard production line have a design speed of 1,000 m/min and a maximum web-width of 5,660 mm. They feature a jet nozzle to apply the coating color to the paper web.

Buckman, a privately-held global company specializing in innovative chemistry and smart solutions, announced global price increases of 5 to 20% for all product offerings. The price increases will become effective immediately, or as customer contracts allow.

Price increases will vary depending on geographic region, solutions offered and market(s) served. In some areas, increases may be higher where local conditions may necessitate additional adjustments.

Siemens Energy and Heat Management have entered a strategic partnership to jointly contribute to a global reduction of the CO₂ footprint in the pulp and paper industry.

By exchanging innovations and further developing optimized steam sootblowing- and steam turbine control solutions, the companies intend to drive the transition to more sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy systems on a global scale.

Paper waste exporters worldwide now have to shift their supply chains: China, a global key processor of imported waste, banned solid waste imports in 2021. Countries with insufficient domestic paper processing capacity will now be forced to develop these facilities, against the current global trend towards the circular economy. 

Toscotec has launched the new generation design of its shoe press TT NextPress, featuring superior drying performances and energy savings, resulting from R&D activities in cooperation with Voith. TT NextPress delivers a stable after-press dryness rate of more than 47% on a tissue line operating above 2,000 mpm speed. This dryness level ensures a substantial reduction of energy consumption, as the Yankee and the hoods use significantly less thermal energy to complete the paper drying process.

ANDRITZ has received an order from Nine Dragons Paper Industries to supply two chemi-thermomechanical pulping systems for their mills in China. The start-ups are scheduled for spring and summer 2022. ANDRITZ will install its well-proven P-RC APMP (pre-conditioning refiner chemical alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp) technology to ensure optimum pulp quality at lowest energy consumption and highest availability. The fiberlines will have a capacity of 1,000 admt/d and 670 admt/d, respectively, and will process a mixture of eucalyptus, acacia and poplar wood chips for the production of folding boxboard (FBB).

Valmet will supply a Valmet IntelliTissue 1600 tissue making line to Chinese tissue producer C&S. The new line will be installed at the company's mill in Tangshan, China.

The specific value of the order was not disclosed, however a project of this size and scope is typically valued at around EUR 5-10 million, Valmet said.

Valmet IntelliTissue machines belong to the small and medium size tissue machines that were integrated to Valmet's offering when the company acquired PMP from Poland in 2020. This order will be Valmet's twelfth IntelliTissue tissue making line delivery to C&S.

Voith announced that will supply Nine Dragons with three XcelLine paper machines for the production of high performance testliner and white top testliner.

Julia Schaefer, Global Communication Manager for Voith Paper told PaperAge that at this time Voith is not authorized to state the location(s) of the mill(s) where the new machines will be installed.

The planned daily production volume of the three identical paper machines is especially high — approximately 2,400 metric tons each, at production speeds of 1,400 m/min.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö has completed an investment in one of its filtration material production lines in Binzhou, China. The machine rebuild adds production capacity and new capabilities that will further enhance the product portfolio. The production line will be able to deliver the highest performing oil, fuel, air and industrial filtration materials, which will strengthen Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s offering and service for the Asian customers.

Valmet will supply two Valmet Advantage DCT tissue lines, including automation system and three tissue rewinders, to Zhejiang Jingxing Paper Joint Stock Co., Ltd. in China. The new line will support the company's increasing demand for high-quality tissue products in the domestic and international markets. The start-ups are planned for the first half of 2022.

ANDRITZ has received an order from Lee & Man Paper to supply two semi-chemical fiberlines for its mills in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, and Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, China. Start-up of both lines is scheduled for the end of 2022.

The new fiberlines will have a capacity of 1,000 admt/d each and process eucalyptus wood chips to produce semi-chemical pulp, an intermediate grade between kraft pulp and mechanical pulp.

Kadant Fiberline (China) Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Kadant Inc., announced it successfully started up two OCC systems at Sun Paper's PM1 and PM2 in Muang Phin, Laos. The OCC systems each have a capacity of 400,000 tons per year.

The recycled containerboard machines have a design speed of 1200 mpm and a trim width of 6.6 m. PM 1 produces containerboard grades in basis weights of 140-250 gsm while PM 2 produces packaging paper grades in basis weights of 100-150 gsm.

Huhtamaki has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Jiangsu Hihio-Art Packaging Co. Ltd., a leading manufacturer of paper bags, wraps and folding carton packaging in China. The company currently serves international quick-service restaurants (QSR) as well as national bakery chains.

The debt free purchase price is EUR 27 million.
